Density Testing Requirements

Understanding compaction testing requirements for civil construction.

Density Testing Methods

  • Sand replacement - AS 1289.5.3.1 (standard method)
  • Nuclear density gauge - AS 1289.5.8.1 (quick field method)
  • Water replacement - AS 1289.5.3.2 (coarse materials)

Typical Requirements

Compaction requirements vary by material and location:

  • Earthworks fill - typically 95-100% SMDD
  • Structural fill - typically 98-100% SMDD
  • Pavement layers - typically 98-100% MMDD
  • Pipe bedding/haunch - typically 95% SMDD

Testing Frequency

Testing frequency is specified per lot or area:

  • Earthworks: typically 1 per 500-1000m²
  • Pavements: typically 1 per 250-500m²
  • Trenches: typically 1 per layer per 50m
